Efficient utilization technique of iron resources
Utilization of impurities in steel
Increment of steel production brings about increasing accumulation of steel scrap which is another candidate as iron resource. However, steel scrap contains variety of impurities necessary to be removed. A typical impurity in steel scrap is copper originating from wire harness in automobiles, causing the surface cracking during the solidification or working process, but copper is very hard to remove. Our lab is developing technologies to remove copper utilizing a physical phenomenon which takes place during production process. Strengthening of steel is also being challenged by forming fine particles with copper in steel.
Ironmaking from Lunar or Martian soils
Increment of steel production induces the degradation of available iron ore. High quality iron ore having high iron oxide ratio will run out in the near future and we will be forced to efficiently produce steels from degraded ores poor in iron oxide. One of ultimate technology to solve this problem is Ironmaking from Lunar or Martian soils, which project has been promoted in corporation with JAXA.
