On the basis of discipline “Physical Chemistry”, we aim to seek the innovative technology contributing to development of human society through the main topic of “Iron and Steelmaking” in harmony with the environment. Since recorded history, the human being have produced about 18 billion tons of iron in total. An analysis report says that the same amount of iron will be produced only in next 50 years. Namely, the annual steel production is ever-increasing presently all over the world. However, too large steel production brings about the environmental problem. In Japan, we emit about 1 billion tons of CO2 per year, 15 % of which is generated in steelmaking industry. Highly required is the technology improving the productivity of steel without further CO2 emission and environmental pollution. The following two countermeasures are the promising methods to solve this problem.
1. To improve the efficiency of steel production.
2. To utilize degraded iron resource such as low-grade iron ore and steel scrap
